About the GNFB

The Groupement des Néphrologues Francophones de Belgique (GNFB) is a non-profit association founded in 1996 for and by nephrologists working in French-speaking Belgium (Brussels and Wallonia) to promote nephrology in all its aspects, both in university hospital centres and non-university centres.

Origins: the structuring of Belgian French-speaking nephrology

The GNFB is a non-profit association founded in 1996 by nephrologists from French-speaking Belgium (Brussels and Wallonia), active in university and peripheral centres.

Its creation responded to the need for a representative structure of the French-speaking nephrology community, capable of federating centres, defending professional interests and supporting the scientific development of the discipline.

It was established in a context where Belgian nephrology was already structured around chronic dialysis and renal transplantation, while exchanges remained mainly local and institutional.

Our missions

Belgian French-speaking dialysis registry

The GNFB plays an essential role in the management and monitoring of the dialysis registry in Belgium, contributing to:

  • the collection of useful and reliable data
  • the continuous improvement of practices
  • the evaluation of quality and epidemiological trends

This data can be transmitted to INAMI and/or the SPF.

Continuing education for nephrologists

The GNFB supports dynamic continuing education by organising and relaying scientific and practical activities, in particular through:

  • the creation of 4 annual events in-person and/or online
  • dedicated sessions for doctors and nursing staff, promoting teamwork
  • the dissemination of important events (Congresses, Seminars, Webinars, Forums) in nephrology

Defence of professional interests

The GNFB defends the interests of the profession with medical bodies, health institutions and competent authorities, in order to:

  • support the recognition of the role of nephrologists
  • promote equitable practice conditions
  • contribute to discussions on the organisation of renal care

Dissemination of studies, surveys and scientific events

The GNFB ensures active monitoring and dissemination of important events in the field of nephrology:

  • national and international congresses
  • continuing education, forums and webinars
  • World Kidney Day
  • Studies and surveys available in Belgium

Public representation

The GNFB carries the voice of French-speaking nephrology in the public and institutional space, as:

  • an interlocutor for renal health projects
  • a partner of scientific and medical organisations
  • a representative of field practices and realities

Support and organisation of patient peer events

The GNFB actively supports:

  • projects involving peer patients and/or patient associations
  • young assistants and future nephrologists, in particular through training support and grants for participation in European congresses (ERA-EDTA)

Projects and achievements

Development of a regional nephrology registry

One of the GNFB’s first major achievements was the establishment of the Nephrology Registry of the French Community of Belgium (RNCFB).

From the 1990s, this registry systematically collected data on patients with end-stage renal failure, enabling monitoring of incidence, prevalence, treatment modalities (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplantation), patient characteristics across different techniques and certain quality indicators.

The annual reports published by the registry still constitute an important historical source on the evolution of renal care management in French-speaking Belgium.

Promoting quality of care

Over the years, the GNFB has developed several activities aimed at:

  • collecting and analysing regional data;
  • organising Peer Reviews between centres via a shared registry;
  • developing quality indicators in dialysis and transplantation;
  • participating in national and international collaborative projects.
  • communicating with government health authorities (SPF Health and INAMI)

The Peer Review system, still active today, allows centres to compare their results and practices on various clinical and organisational quality indicators.
